UFO Walk of Fame to debut at 2022 UFO Festival

UFO Festival 2022

The 2022 UFO Festival will be officially opened with the debut of Roswell’s UFO Walk of Fame, recognizing those who have significant connections to UFO investigation and research, science and space professions, and the sci-fi arts.

The initial inductees to the Walk of Fame are two men who have significant links to the 1947 Roswell Incident, which many people believe was the crash of an alien flying saucer on a ranch northwest of the city. The creation of the UFO Walk of Fame takes place as the July 1-3 UFO Festival marks the 75th anniversary of the July 1947 crash of an object, the wreckage of which was brought to Roswell and turned over to the Air Force, which had a base in Roswell at that time.

The UFO Festival’s opening ceremony Friday, July 1, at 1 p.m. at Pioneer Plaza in downtown Roswell will be highlighted by the unveiling of the UFO Walk of Fame’s first two markers honoring Stanton Friedman and Jesse Marcel Sr.

Friedman, a nuclear physicist and professional ufologist, is recognized as the original civilian investigator of the Roswell Incident. He supported the hypothesis that the incident was a crash of an extraterrestrial spacecraft. Friedman died in 2019.

Marcel was an Air Force officer and key part of the military team that took custody of the debris found at the ranch site in Corona, N.M., about 75 miles from Roswell. Years later, he stated he believed the materials he and other members of the team examined were extraterrestrial. Marcel died in 1986.

Friedman’s daughter, Melissa Friedman, and Marcel’s grandson, Jesse Marcel III, plan to be in Roswell to attend the inaugural UFO Walk of Fame ceremony. The City of Roswell plans to induct new honorees into the Walk of Fame annually during the UFO Festival.

Each planet-shaped marker, featuring the name of the honoree, will be embedded in the sidewalk, beginning this year at the east edge of Pioneer Plaza. As new inductees are added, the Walk of Fame will extend out to the sidewalk along adjacent Main Street and then proceed south toward the UFO Museum and International Research Center about three blocks away.
