Ready to Read/Ready to Learn
What is The Ready to Read Program?
The Ready to Read program is designed for pre-school aged children. Through research, we understand that the best way to prepare a child for success in reading is to read to them. The Ready to Read program is designed to encourage parents to read aloud to their children.
What is The Ready to Learn Program?
The Read to Learn program is designed in tandem with the Ready to Read program to ensure children go to school prepared to learn. The program is based on early childhood research that embraces the idea that parents are a child’s first teacher. The program provides low or no-cost activities that encourage children to reach milestones in child development in the following areas:
- cognition and general knowledge,
- social and emotional development,
- approaches to learning,
- language and literacy skills
- physical development and health.
To ensure the activities are age-appropriate, the Ready to Learn program is divided into four age groups:
- Birth to 18 months,
- 2 to 3 years old,
- 3 to 4 years old
- 4 years old and older.
Program Goals
The annual goal of the Ready to Read program is for parents and children to read 350 books a year. The program's overall goal is to have a child listen to 1,000 books before entering kindergarten.
The monthly goal of the Ready to Learn program is to complete 10 activities per month with an overall goal of achieving 1,000 developmental skills before kindergarten.
How It Works
Parents can sign up their children for the online Ready to Read program by registering online using Beanstack. Participants are encouraged to keep track of all the books they have read to their children through Beanstack. However, parents who may not have complete access to the website or its app may choose to log their books read on paper.
Participants will earn electronic badges ("e-badge") depending on the number of books read. They are:
- 1 Book Read
- 10 Books Read
- 25 Books Read
- 50 Books Read
- 75 Books Read
- 100 Books Read
Once a child earns an e-badge, he or she is eligible for a prize. The goal is to have participants read 350 Books in a year.
Parents may also choose to sign up their children for the Ready to Learn program. Like the reading program, The Ready to Learn program focuses on encouraging children to reach such milestones in child development such as cognition and general knowledge, social and emotional skills, approaches to learning, language and literacy skills, and physical and overall health development.
In order to reach a development milestone, participants must complete an experiential learning activity with their child. Examples of some of these learning activities are:
- Checking Pulse
- Counting Blinks
- Counting Breaths
- Counting Down to Birthdays
- Drawing Your Family
- ABCs
Once a parent and child complete a learning activity, they earn an "e-badge" for a chance to win a prize. In order to participate in the monthly drawing for a prize, participants must complete ten activities throughout the year.
Prizes for both of these programs are given through the Roswell Library foundation.
Prizes
The Roswell Public Library will hand out prizes monthly to winners of the Ready to Read/Ready to Learn programs. Prizes are age-appropriate, educational tools that encourage playful learning and inquiry.
Participants in the Ready to Read program are eligible for their first drawing after reading their first 25 books. Afterward, participants are eligible for prizes in increments of 25 books, and later 50 books.
Participants in the Ready to Learn program are eligible for their first drawing after completing 10 activities. Participants are eligible for more prizes as they continue to complete ten additional activities.
