City opens internship program

The City of Roswell has set up an internship program that offers college and high school students the chance to gain professional experience in any of a variety of municipal-government disciplines. College students can also potentially earn course credit toward their degrees.

The paid internships are available in most of the city’s departments and would generally last no more than three to four months. Local students can work as an intern during a given school semester while still attending classes. An intern’s work schedule with the city can be worked out to accommodate the student’s class schedule. Summer internships are also available.

This program goes toward meeting the goal contained in the city’s 2015 Comprehensive Plan of working closely with educational institutes to enhance and expand workforce training programs. While the program is eyed as a means to further develop the city’s partnership with Eastern New Mexico University-Roswell and the New Mexico Military Institute, students of any college are welcome to participate. This affords the opportunity for a student from Roswell who may be attending college elsewhere to take part in the internship program while home for the summer.

This program will assist in developing young professionals within the community by providing real-life training opportunities for students desiring to advance their skills in their respective fields of study. High school juniors and seniors who may not yet have defined a field of study can take advantage of the program to gain work experience that can be used as a beneficial element on a college application. Other high school students with an idea about what they may like to do in the future can work as an intern to get a head start on an anticipated field of study.

Available internships will be determined by the needs of the city and the availability of qualified students. To inquire about available internships and how to apply, call the City of Roswell Human Resources Department at (575) 637-6268. To learn specific details about the new program, contact City of Roswell Director of Administrative Services Elizabeth Gilbert at (575) 624-6700 or e.gilbert@roswell-nm.gov

City representatives believe these internships offer students the opportunity to gain experience, develop skills, make connections, strengthen their resumes, learn about a field, and assess their interests and abilities. At the same time, the program is a way for the city to give back to the community by helping local students get started in a potential career while enhancing the local workforce.
