A national independent review website that focuses on home-security systems has listed Roswell as the 20th safest city in New Mexico.
The “Safest Cities in New Mexico” report was developed by SafeWise based on FBI crime data for 2016. SafeWise released its report Monday, March 26.
To compile the report, SafeWise reviewed the 2016 FBI crime report statistics and population data for cities, towns and villages – among New Mexico’s estimated 102 incorporated municipalities – that met the report’s qualifications. Municipalities of populations of less than 6,000 are not included in the report. Also, municipalities that failed to submit a complete crime report to the FBI are excluded from the report.
The evaluation done by SafeWise is based on the number of certain reported violent crimes (aggravated assault, murder, rape and robbery) in each municipality, which the report refers to as a city. When necessary to break a tie while ranking cities, SafeWise factored in the number of property crimes (burglary, arson, larceny/theft and motor vehicle theft). To level the playing field, crime numbers were calculated at the rate of crimes per 1,000 people in each city. This makes it easier to directly compare the likelihood of crimes occurring in cities with vastly different populations.
“Small and big towns are working together with law enforcement officials to create safer cities across the state,” said SafeWise security analyst Laura Craner.

SafeWise reviews, compares and ranks home-security systems. It compiles information and provides that information online through its own “comparison engine” people can use to compare security systems offered by various companies.
