Creating Cyanotypes Instructor: David Emitt Adams Age/Skill Level: all (children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult) Saturday, May 27, 2017 1-4pm $30 members, $40 non-members Learn about the historic cyanotype process and how to make your own photographic prints. Participants in this workshop will use botanical specimens, lace, cut paper and other common household objects to create one-of-a-kind photograms on light sensitive paper. These working methods are similar to the ones used by photographers of the early 1800s.

    New class at RMAC! Ekphrastic Poetry Wednesdays for four weeks May 10-31, 3-4:30pm Age/Skill: 16 and up, all levels Instructor: Colette Speer $45 for members; $55 for non-members If you were going to write a poem about or in response to a work of art in the Roswell Museum and Art Center, which work would you choose? Ekphrastic poems are poems written about works of art. In the first two sessions, participants will engage in the pure pleasure of reading a range of ekphrastic poems selected from this long poetic tradition and they will respond to the poems in conversation with others. In the second part of the workshop, participants will write their own ekphrastic poems in response to a work of art in the museum's exhibitions.

  1. All Day Hands-on Archaeology Exhibit + Special Storytime

    May 27, 2017, 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM @ Bondurant Room

    The Office of Archaeological Studies will be featuring a hands-on exploration of New Mexico archaeology and prehistoric lifeways using a wide range of archaeological artifacts to tell the story. The artifacts are essentially arranged as a time line that begins with the earliest Paleoinidan Clovis and Folsom Points and proceeds through various time periods down to around WW II. Library patrons of all ages to have direct hands-on experience with a wide range of artifacts as well as talking with an archaeologist. The artifacts inspire the imagination of the patrons and lead to deeper levels of interaction about such things as preservation, cultural diversity, environment, and a wide range of topics. All day event. Special Storytime presentation at 2PM.

Encompassing works created by both faculty and alumni, as well as prominent southwestern artists such as Laura Gilpin and Kenneth Miller Adams, this collection is an important facet of Roswell’s vast cultural heritage, and emphasizes the Institute’s ongoing interest and commitment to art as well as education. In recognition of NMMI’s 125th anniversary, this exhibit will showcase the school’s art collection, and highlight the Institute’s interaction with the Roswell Museum.
